Janet Jackson's plans to go back on the road have been shelved after an undisclosed illness forced her to cancel a comeback show in Connecticut.

The Control singer was preparing for a show in Montreal, Canada, when she was taken ill last month and rushed to hospital.

After spending over a week recuperating, the 42-year-old had been due to the stage for a concert in Connecticut on Saturday.

But now her representative has said: "Janet Jackson's anticipated return to her Rock Witchu tour in Uncasville has been postponed due to doctor's orders."

A statement from her promoters Live Nation had claimed earlier: "Janet, who has been under her doctor's care and recuperating over the last week, is excited about getting back on the road and again being able to share with her fans what she feels is one of her best stage shows ever."

The illness has caused Jackson to cancel shows in Montreal, Boston, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Philadelphia, and Greensboro, North Carolina and the tour should now resume in Verona, New York, on Monday.

A source close to Jackson's boyfriend Jermaine Dupri was quoted by People magazine as citing "exhaustion" as the reason for her stay in hospital.

A 42-year-old body can't handle what a 22-year-old body can," said the source. "I can tell you that she's definitely tired. It was probably exhaustion. She is doing back-to-back, three-hour shows, and her body isn't the same as it used to be."
