Newcastle United's relegation fears have deepened after a 1-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur at White Lane.
Darren Bent scored in the first-half to leave the Magpies without a win in eight games, leaving them four points away from safety.
And Spurs will feel they should have scored more goals against a shambolic Magpies side.
The home side will feel they should have been awarded a penalty early on when Bent had his shirt tugged by Sebastien Bassong, but referee Mark Halsey waved play-on.
Spurs continued to dominate the rest of the half with Bent's strike from 15 yards saved by Harper. And it was the England striker who broke the deadlock on 23 minutes when he pounced to score a rebound from a right angle, after his first shot was parried by Harper.
Harper kept his side in the game with an acrobatic save to tip Tom Huddlestone's pile-driver over the bar.
Despite Michael Dawson being stretchered off after landing awkwardly, Harry Redknapp's men continued their onslaught with Harper again saving a long-range effort from Huddlestone while Bent headed inches over the bar from substitute Alan Hutton's cross.
Although Shearer brought on Alan Smith, Obafemi Martins, and Mark Viduka in the second-half, it continued to be one-way traffic. Wilson Palacios' goalbound shot was blocked by Bassong while Lennon drilled a shot inches wide.
Martins did have a goal ruled out for handball, before testing Heurelho Gomes for the first time with a stinging volley.
The Nigerian's penalty appeals were turned down in the dying minutes after he was brought down by Jonathan Woodgate, and Martins then spurned a glorious chance to equalize when he blazed over from six yards out.
But despite a late rally, Newcastle were unable to grab an equaliser which leaves them in 19th place in the table while Spurs remain in ninth position.
