New citizenship test for Australia

The Australian government has unveiled a new citizenship test for immigrants based on history and culture.

Based on current affairs knowledge, awareness of Australia's past and constitutional details, the test requires potential applicants to answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly to be eligible for citizenship.

A further English language test was also revealed, which immigration minister Kevin Andrews says is important for potential migrants to mix effectively with the Australian community.

The government has insisted that the test is aimed at developing a more integrated society, with people from 200 countries around the world all fulfilling their ambitions of becoming Australians.

Mr Andrews said that the test aimed to get "that balance between diversity and integration correct in future".

Some of the questions include naming the current Australian prime minister (John Howard) and the population of Australia (approx 21 million).
