Hull FC's proposed signing of Australian international second row Michael Crocker has been thrown into doubt after a visa application was turned down.
The 28-year-old was set to join the Super League club in the close season, but has been turned down by the consulate for a permit to work in the UK.
The ruling, which is subject to an appeal, means Crocker may not be allowed to complete his move from NRL side Melbourne Storm in time for the start of the new season next weekend, if at all.
In a statement, the English club said: "Hull FC have today been informed that Michael Crocker has had his application for a visa rejected.
"Hull FC and Michael are reviewing the papers from the consulate in order to determine the next steps.
"Neither Michael nor Hull FC will make any further comment at this stage until their course of action is established.
"The visa system does provide a right of appeal and the club does not wish to compromise a potential appeal by making public comment at this stage."
Crocker was expected to be one of the sport's marquee signings of the winter ahead of the 2009 season.
He played for the Storm in the NRL grand final last year and was also named in the initial Australia squad for the 2008 World Cup, although he was forced to pull out due to an injury.
