Happy Mondays played a short set at the Brighton Great Escape festival, dropping in a number of their classic tracks.

Frontman Shaun Ryder, dancing mascot Bez and the rest of the Mondays played a small venue to showcase some of their new material.

According to the Independent, Ryder told the crowd "this is rock 'n' roll and we like it," while holding a pint of beer during the gig.

Although the Mondays picked Great Escape to continue their UK comeback, the Brighton festival is traditionally about up and coming bands such as Gallows, who played a show to open the event.

Aside from some stage injuries, the band ambled through with their usual aggressive and shouty format of guitar rock.

Also playing were CSS, who lit up Concorde 2 with their sassy brand of Brazilian indie pop, including their current single Let's Make Love (And Listen to Death from Above).

Highlights from tonight's gigs include a show by the Rakes at Concorde 2 and gigs from the Holloways, Foals and the Magic Numbers.

The festival will conclude on Saturday.
