A trio of American players, Justin Leonard, Davis Love III and Lucas Glover, are tied for the lead after the first round of the Verizon Heritage.
Glover recovered from two bogeys in his first four holes of the day to card a five-under-par round of 66 and Leonard was also forced to bounce back from an early bogey at the par-four third hole with six birdies.
Love III enjoyed a mistake-free round as he carded five birdies and no bogeys, including picking up four shots on the front nine alone to move into a share of the lead in South Carolina.
Still well poised in a group of ten players tied for second on four under par are Englishmen Brian Davis and Nick Dougherty.
Dougherty's bogey-free 67 puts him one shot behind the leaders in a tie with several big names still in contention - including Stewart Cink and Charles Howell III.
World number three Jim Furyk is a further shot back after a three-under-par round of 68, along with fellow American Scott Verplank.
And the rest of the top challengers from Europe are Swedes, with Mathias Gronberg (-4), Niclas Fasth and Daniel Chopra (both -2) still in touch with the top of the leaderboard.
