Coldplay are set to follow their chart-topping success across the Atlantic with their first-ever number one single in the UK.

Viva La Vida, the title track from the foursome's new album, has just topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the US, having been downloaded by an amazing 246,000 people in the past week.

And with UK music fans equally as keen to download the song, which features on an iTunes commercial, the anthemic track is likely to top the singles chart in the four-piece's homeland, according to HMV.

Last week's number one single, the Mint Royale remix of Singin' in the Rain as used by Britain's Got Talent winner George Sampson, is still selling well. It faces a strong challenge from Ne-Yo's new single Closer as well as Love Song by US singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles.

But according to the music retailer, the download figures for Viva La Vida see it winning the race and becoming Coldplay's first-ever UK number one single on Sunday.

"The Coldplay success story just keeps getting bigger," said HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo.

"Not only is Viva La Vida set to become the biggest-selling album release of 2008, but the band are also on course to enjoy their first-ever double number one single and album celebration.

"Viva La Vida is one of HMV's biggest-ever selling downloads, and it's helping to take our digital service to a much wider audience."

Violet Hill, the first single from the band's fourth album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, is still selling well, despite being made available as a free download for seven days last month, and could see Coldplay claiming two spots in the top ten this weekend.

And having claimed the number one spot in the album chart after selling more than 300,000 copies in its first three days on release last week, Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends is expected to break through the 500,000 barrier, putting it on course to become the fastest-selling album of the year.
