Some six months after the event, Beyonce Knowles has opened up about her wedding to Jay-Z for the first time.

The singer and her rap star boyfriend were married in New York City in early April but have remained typically reticent about the nuptials.

But speaking to Essence magazine, the former Destiny Child's member has revealed some small details about marrying the Roc-A-Fella mogul.

"What Jay and I have is real. It's not about interviews or getting the right photo op. It's real," the singer said.

After joking: "You're gonna get me in trouble," when asked about the marriage, Beyonce explained that the wedding ceremony was small and intimate as she is not a "traditional woman".

"It's been my day so many days already," she added.

The singer explained that she does not wear an engagement ring as "people put too much emphasis on that".

"It's just material and it's just silly to me."

However, the magazine reports that Beyonce wears a band on her ring finger which covers a tattoo of the Roman numeral IV.

Jay-Z, 38, has the same tattoo on his left hand, signifying their wedding date - April 4th - his December 4th birthday and Beyonce's September 4th birthday.

The two have been together since September 2002, and they performed together in music videos for two of her hit singles, Crazy in Love and Deja Vu.

And Beyonce admitted she "always knew" she and Jay-Z - real name Shawn Carter - would be married, adding: "We've been together a long time".
