US troops pull out a base in Afghanistan
US troops have pulled out a base in Afghanistan after nine soldiers were killed earlier this week.

Local police official Ghoolam Farouq claimed American and Afghan troops pulled out of the base near the Wanat village yesterday morning.

A small police force has been left in the village with a further 50 officers being sent to reinforce them.

On Sunday, militants attacked the new base, killing nine troops and wounded another 15 in the deadliest assault on US troops in Afghanistan in three years.

Nato confirmed the base had been vacated but claimed international and Afghan troops will "retain a strong presence in that area with patrolling and other means".

Spokesman Captain Mike Finney added: "We are committed, now more than ever, to establishing a secure environment that will allow even greater opportunities for development and a stronger Afghan governmental influence."End of story
