Afghanistan would become a "failed state" if the international community withdrew from the region, David Miliband has said.
In an interview with the Today programme, the foreign secretary stated that any kind of withdrawal would damage the country.
"I think Afghanistan would become a failed state if the international community pulled out. It is evident for me that we have an interest in being there, but we are making a difference," he said.
The foreign secretary claimed that the battle to end the opium production in the country was dependant on security levels.
He also called for a better international relationship with president Hamid Karzai and a UN secretary general's representative in the country.
Mr Miliband was responding to comment made by former Liberal Democrat leader Lord Ashdown, who alleged over the weekend that Afghanistan was a failed state and questioned the progress being made by the international community.
