A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.
The unnamed soldier from the Second Battalion the Rifles died yesterday while on patrol in Gereshk in Helmand province.
"We share in the pain that is felt by his family, friends and colleagues at the loss of this courageous soldier; our thoughts and prayers are with them," said Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, spokesman for Taskforce Helmand.
The soldier's next of kin have been informed, the MoD added.
His death takes the UK military death-toll in Afghanistan to 166 since the US-led invasion of 2001. Six British military personnel have died in the last fortnight.
