Kate Winslet has scooped both main acting awards at the Golden Globes on a night when Slumdog Millionaire was honoured four times.

As the Hollywood awards season got underway in earnest, Winslet, 33, made it sixth and seventh times lucky after previously being nominated unsuccessfully five times at the Golden Globes.

She was named as best supporting actress for her portrayal of a Nazi concentration camp guard in The Reader and also best actress in a drama for her husband Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road, in which she plays a disillusioned housewife opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Slumdog Millionaire, in which a boy from the slums of Mumbai recounts his life story after being accused of cheating on the Hindi version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, walked away with four awards on the night.

Danny Boyle was named best director while the film itself was named best drama and screenplay writer Simon Beaufoy and composer AR Rahman were also given individual awards.

Elsewhere Heath Ledger was given a posthumous best supporting actor award for The Dark Knight, raising expectations of an Oscar nomination next month.

There were also awards on the night for Pixar animation Wall-E and documentary Waltz with Bashir.
