Four men have been charged with conspiring to support the Tamil Tigers terrorist organisation.

The Metropolitan police confirmed today that the men, arrested in London, Wales and Swindon last month, are accused of possessing laptops and other equipment for terrorist purposes.

They are set to appear before Westminster's magistrates' court later today.

The Tamil Tigers are recognised as a terrorist organisation by the UK, the European Union and India.

The group has been fighting for an independent Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka since the 1970s.

A police statement confirmed that the men, aged 33, 39, 46 and 51, were arrested a part of a long-term investigation into supporting overseas terrorism.

The men were named as Arunachalam Chrishanthakumar, 51, of Norbury, Jegatheswaran Muraleetharan, 46 and Jeyatheswaran Vythyatharan, 39, of Newtown, and Murugesu Jegatheeswaran, of Mitcham, south London.

They are charged with conspiring to receive equipment for terrorist purposes between the beginning of 2003 and December 2006.End of story
