Premiership Wigan have been knocked out of the Carling Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road.
Rodney Jack gave the Railwaymen the lead on 42 minutes before Nicky Maynard sealed the win with an injury-time second.
Last year's runners-up struggled to create any meaningful chances, although Crewe goalkeeper Ben Williams was forced into a good save from Emile Heskey 15 minutes from the end.
Elsewhere, Tim Cahill's 87th minute goal rescued Everton from extra-time as they beat Peterborough 2-1 at London Road.
Jude Stirling's own goal gave the Premiership club the lead on 24th minute but former Leicester striker Trevor Benjamin equalized for Posh 11 minutes into the second-half.
However, the Australian tapped home with three minutes remaining to send the Toffees into the next round.
West Brom, who parted company with manager Bryan Robson yesterday, came from a goal down to beat Cheltenham Town 3-1 at the Hawthorns.
Kayode Odejayi gave the visitors the lead on the stroke of half-time before goals from Ronnie Wallwork and penalties from Nathan Ellington and Stuart Nicholson gave them the win.
Sheffield United put their league worries behind them with a narrow 1-0 win over Bury at Bramall Lane.
Christian Nade's 16th minute drive was the difference between the two sides, although United goalkeeper Ian Bennett was forced to make a number of saves to keep Neil Warnock's side in the competition.
