Sam Allardyce has praised the way his defence has started the season but says he wants more goals from his strikers ahead of Bolton's premiership game with Wigan.

Allardyce is delighted with the points haul his side has achieved so far this season but believes that an improvement can be made in the final third to propel them further still.

He said: "I am happy to share the goals out. But we still need someone to get into double figures this year to help our ultimate goal of getting back into Europe."

The Trotters' manager said that he felt that summer acquisition, Nicolas Anelka had been going through a settling in period and that he might have scored more if he had received better service.

Looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat to Manchester United last week, Allardyce said that Bolton's current position was largely due to their defensive efforts and backed them to continue their good form.

The Bolton man said he was amazed by the way they had coped with injuries at the back and hoped the forwards would begin to show their quality too.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell said that he wanted his side to perform in the same way as Bolton and hoped to emulate fellow coach Sam Allardyce.

He said: "Let's face it, Wigan will never be a Liverpool or a Manchester United but Bolton are a club we can be like if we are successful."

Despite sitting third in the table Bolton have lost their last two games in all competitions while Wigan have won their last two Premiership outings.
