Bent - his goals kept Charlton up last season

Manchester United came back from a goal down to beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane and ensure they maintained their grip on Premiership pole position.

The Blades went ahead after 13 minutes when a United old-boy, Keith Gillespie, nodded in a deep cross from Derek Geary.

But United composed themselves after that early blow and, after scoring for England in midweek, it was Wayne Rooney who proved their saviour as he netted twice.

His first came on the half-hour as the former Everton starlet dragged down a Gary Neville cross and fired past Paddy Kenny.

But the winner came with just 15 minutes remaining, as Neville's defensive colleague Patrice Evra supplyied a measured ball from the left flank that Rooney met with a powerful volley.

Elsewhere Mikel Arteta's wonder-strike was enough to give Everton a 1-0 win over Bolton at Goodison Park.

Watford's afternoon turned sour as Jay DeMerit's first-half header was cancelled out by goals by Kanu and a last-minute penalty from Lomana Lua-Lua as Portsmouth took all three points in a 2-1 win at Fratton Park.

The appointment of Les Reed as new head coach is yet to turn around Charlton's fortunes as Seol Ki-Hyeon and Kevin Doyle scored the goals in a 2-0 home win for Reading.
