David James is on his way out of Eastlands with Portsmouth offering a fee that has met with manager Stuart Pearce's approval.
The England keeper is believed to want a move south to be closer to his fiancee who lives in the Hertfordshire area he grew up in.
The news was announced through a simple statement on City's official website.
"Manchester City has this evening confirmed an offer has been accepted from Portsmouth for goalkeeper David James," it read.
With the 36-year-old stopper on his way south, all that stands between Harry Redknapp and his target is completion of a medical.
Redknapp will be hoping that James adapts to life on the south coast better than another former Liverpool goalie Sander Westerveld who left the club after just six disastrous games.
He will certainly feel at home with Sol Campbell, an England team-mate for many years, also joining the Portsmouth backline just yesterday.
Pearce is busy lining up Swedish international Andreas Isaksson as a possible replacement from French side Rennes.
With the season now just a little over a week away, and the injury-prone Nicky Weaver the only other established goalkeeper in his squad, he will be keen to move quickly to land his target.
