Michael Owen has told Newcastle fans that he will not rush back to action at the end of this season and run the risk of a recurrence of his knee injury.
The striker suffered serious ligament damage after falling awkwardly in England's World Cup group match against Sweden this summer.
He has crossed the Atlantic twice to go under the knife of US specialist Richard Steadman as he seeks to ensure that the injury fully heals.
But as he recovers from the surgery he admits that the possibility of him pulling on the famous black-and-white shirt this season may be slim.
"The general gist of it is between six to nine months, so if it's six, it will be the start of April, seven the start of May and eight or nine I will miss the season," said the injury-plagued 26 year-old.
"It depends on which one of them. I won't come back until it's ready. It would be foolish not to do that. I'm sure I will come back fit and strong when I do come back."
In spite of his lengthy spell on the sidelines Owen told Sky Sports News that he has been a constant presence in the Magpies' dressing room.
"Apart from that [surgery in the USA] I have been at the club every day. It's enjoyable seeing the lads every morning, talking about football and other things. It's what you're meant to do really."
