West Bromwich Albion's stubborn grip on goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak has finally been loosened as Manchester United sign the player on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal.
The Baggies had rebuffed Sir Alex Ferguson's advances for the Polish stopper on three previous occasions, insisting that he was a vital part of Bryan Robson's bid to return the club to the top flight at the first attempt.
Kuszczak was keen for the move to go through however, and he now finds himself ideally positioned to move into the number one jersey after serving his time as understudy.
Dutch international Edwin van der Sar is set to retire at the end of the 2007/08 season having won a one-year extension to his contract after an impressive first season at Old Trafford.
Manchester United finally broke the deadlock by allowing their young goalkeeper Luke Steele to move to the Hawthorns permanently as an immediate replacement for the 24-year-old.
Defender Paul McShane was another makeweight heading for the black country, in a deal which leaves Manchester United well-stocked with goalkeeping options.
Ben Foster and American international Tim Howard are both still at the club although currently on loan at Watford and Everton respectively.
