Wayne Rooney has been questioned by police over an alleged brawl outside a Manchester nightclub.
Two days before Manchester United's clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford, the striker was interviewed by police over claims a photographer was assaulted outside Pacacea in the city centre on October 15th.
The 21-year-old was questioned at a police station in Greater Manchester under caution but was not arrested.
A spokesman for the police said the case would be passed to prosecutors who will decide whether to charge Rooney.
"A 21-year-old man was interviewed today at a police station in Greater Manchester," Greater Manchester police said.
"He voluntarily attended and was interviewed in connection with an alleged assault on October 15th.
"A file is now being prepared for the crown prosecution service."
Rooney had a bust-up with a celebrity photographer at a party for British boxing star Joe Calzaghe, according to newspaper reports.
The photographer did not require medical treatment after the assault on John Dalton Street in the early hours last month.
Rooney played in United's 3-1 win over Wigan on October 14th, the day before the alleged incident.
He is expected to start in United's blockbuster battle with the Blues on Sunday with Sir Alex Ferguson's side going into the game with a slender three-point lead over the Premiership champions.
