Alex Ferguson has told his team that they must make today's game with Chelsea count in the overall race for the title as he feels a six point gap could cause the Blues a problem.
United have been in great form all year, having dropped only five points from a possible 39, and Ferguson believes that their main rivals might find it more difficult to win the Premiership title by coming from behind.
Describing the game as a great opportunity, he said: "When you're competing with a team at the top of the league, you're praying that other teams can help you by taking points off your immediate challenger. But we have an opportunity to do that ourselves this time. It should be a fantastic game."
"Over the last two years, Chelsea have always been nine or ten points ahead, which has made it very difficult for us to peg them back."
The Red Devils have only tasted defeat once during the campaign when Arsenal visited Old Trafford and won 1-0 and Ferguson believes that their strong start will give them the edge in the title race overall.
"This year we have got out of the blocks. For the first time, we are in front and have the prospect of us going six points clear, which would have them chasing us rather than the other way round."
United should have Rio Ferdinand fit to marshal the back line while Louis Saha will hope to put Tuesday's penalty miss against Celtic behind him.
