Defender Micah Richards has not suffered a long-term knee injury, according to the results of scans completed today.
It means he could be available for England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia later this month, despite twisting his knee in the 1-0 Carling Cup win over Bolton Wanderers.
City boss Sven Goran Eriksson feared the player would be out for a while, but now it seems like he could be back in as little as a couple of weeks.
A City spokesperson said: "Micah has bruised his medial meniscus cartilage in his right knee and he will continue to be assessed on a daily basis."
Richards has been a key part of the Manchester City side which has made a fantastic start to the Premier League season.
But, perhaps more importantly, he has made a massive impact with England and with Gary Neville still to fully recover from injury, Richards is the first choice right-back.
But England's game against Croatia at Wembley might be of little significance as they could fail to qualify for Euro 2008 even before the game has kicked off.
If Russia beat Israel and Andorra then Guus Hiddink's team and Croatia will qualify from the group.
