Charlton overcame a spirited Chesterfield as they held their nerve from 12 yards to win on penalties and progress to the next round of the Carling Cup after drawing 3-3 in extra-time.
The Spirites, who knocked out West Ham in the previous round, came within 18 minutes of claiming a second Premiership scalp as a goal in the closing stages of normal time from Darren Bent sent the game into extra-time.
It was the same two scorers who had dispatched the Hammers who threatened to repeat the shock and extend the League One outfit's reputation as giant-killers.
Colin Larkin struck inside two minutes as he met Kevan Hurst's near-post corner and thumped a shot past Scott Carson.
The Saltergate side were well worth their lead and looked the more likely to score after their early opener, but Charlton grabbed a spectacular equaliser against the run of play to draw level.
Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink rifled a long-range low drive into the bottom corner just five minutes before half-time to steady Iain Dowie's men going into the break.
But parity did not last long as Charlton failed to mark men from a corner less than a minute after the restart and promising striker Caleb Folan planted home a header to spark jubilation.
Apart for a couple of spurned chances from centre-back Hermann Hreidarsson, Charlton looked unlikely to find a way through the hosts' stubborn defence for much of the second half.
But the combination of Jerome Thomas and Bent that had brought victory against Manchester City at the weekend again proved profitable.
Bent raced in to bury his midfield colleague's fine cross on 73 minutes, before Hasselbaink pounced to score an almost-identical goal two minutes into extra time to dash the underdogs' hopes.
Wayne Allison won the home side a reprieve as he punished Charlton's profligacy with a goal at the death of extra-time, but the lottery of penalties went the way of the visitors.
