Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson has joined Charlton on loan until the end of the season.
The England under-21 international, who was part of Sven-Goran Eriksson's World Cup squad, will compete for the number one jersey with Thomas Myhre at the Valley.
The arrival of Carson will help new Addicks boss Iain Dowie get over missing out on Norwich City stopper Robert Green, who now seems set to go to West Ham despite Charlton being the early front-runners for his signature.
Carson would have struggled to get regular games for the Anfield club this season as third choice behind Pepe Reina and Jerzy Dudek so the move will help his development and his future England chances.
The absence of David James from new England manager Steve McClaren's first squad and Green's continued absence with a torn groin muscle means the England number two spot is currently open and Carson will be one of those hoping to take advantage by securing regular first-team football.
The 20-year-old is the second signing Charlton have made from Liverpool inside a week after Djimi Traore moved to the Valley for £2million.
Meanwhile, Charlton captain Luke Young has admitted his delight at getting into the England squad.
The full-back was set to travel to the World Cup before an ankle injury forced him out of the tournament.
Now with England's first friendly of the season set for Old Trafford on Wednesday against Greece, Young admits he's glad to be back in the England fold.
"Obviously a new manager has taken over and it's really good to be in his plans and I can't wait to pull on the England shirt again, hopefully on Wednesday night," Young told Charlton's website.
Charlton begin their Premiership season with a London derby away to West Ham.
