Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi could be released in November, a government minister has suggested.
Local sources claim Major General Muang Oo made the announcement during a meeting on Thursday, stating the 64-year-old would be released when her latest house arrest comes to an end.
The Nobel peace prize laureate has spent 14 of the last 20 years in detention and was sentenced to an additional 18 months last year after American John Yettaw swam out to her lakeside residence in Rangoon uninvited.
Human rights groups have continually claimed the sentence was politically motivated and designed to prevent her from taking part in the upcoming elections in Burma this year.
And earlier this month, Daw Suu Kyi's lawyers launched an appeal to Burma's supreme court over the extended sentence.
The United States and other nations are in the process of reviewing their policy towards Burma and its ruling military junta, with Barack Obama leading the calls for democratic reform and political prisoners to be released.
