The governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has reportedly sent a "f**k you" encoded message to a lawmaker.
San Francisco assemblyman Tom Ammiano heckled the governor at an event earlier this month, telling him to "kiss my gay ass".
Now a letter to Mr Ammiano, attached to a veto dealing with financing for the Port of San Francisco, appeared to have the message "I f**k you" encoded down the side.
"My goodness. What a coincidence," said Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear to the Associated Press. "I suppose when you do so many vetoes, something like this is bound to happen."
He then said the governor had sent veto messages in the past with linguistic line-ups such as "soap" and "poet," which he said were also unintended.
"Kudos to the governor for his creative use of coincidence," said Mr Ammiano's spokesman, Quintin Mecke.
"You certainly have to have a sense of humour in politics. Unfortunately, this humour came at the cost of the Port of San Francisco."
Of the eight bills Mr Ammiano has sent to the governor this year, six have been vetoed.
