The greatly anticipated launch of the Apple tablet PC, the iPad, has finally taken place in San Francisco.
The new touchscreen device was unveiled to the world at 18:00 GMT on Wednesday, bringing to an end months of fevered speculation.
The device can be used to watch films, browse the internet and store photographs.
Revealing his company's latest must-have device, Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, said the iPad allowed people to "hold the whole web in your hand" and represented the "third category" between smartphones and laptops.
Earlier in the day the micro-blogging website Twitter was awash with speculation about the new device, with some users claiming to have seen the iPad in advance, describing it as the "best device ever".
Figures out earlier this week showed strong sales of the iPhone in the run up to Christmas helped Apple increase profits by 50 per cent in the final quarter of 2009.
