One of Britain's most famous anti-smoking campaigners has developed lung cancer, it was revealed today.
Allen Carr, who has written a series of extremely successful self-help books encouraging smokers to give up the habit, confirmed his illness earlier today.
"Since I stopped smoking more than 23 years ago I have been the happiest man in the world. I still feel the same way," he said, having said that he was "certain" he would have been dead 20 years ago if he had not given up smoking then.
Mr Carr's addiction was a particularly strong one – at one stage he smoked at least 100 cigarettes every day.
His pioneering efforts to successfully kick the habit have provided a role model for many would-be quitters. In the last two decades he has dedicated his life to helping others give up smoking.
A spokesman for Mr Carr said it was not known whether his smoking habit, or the time spent in smoke-filled rooms during his seminars helping other smokers quit, was responsible for the development of his illness.
