Strathclyde police have confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched into the "horrific" death of missing Polish student Angelika Kluk.
The 23-year-old's body was discovered in the "inner confine" of St Patrick's church in Glasgow's Anderston area at 20:00 BST on Friday and a post mortem was concluded today.
However, police stressed that reports suggesting Peter Tobin, the man last seen with the languages student before she disappeared, had been arrested in connection with the murder were wide of the mark.
Detective Superintendent David Swindle told a news conference that the 60-year-old had in fact been arrested by Metropolitan police on an unrelated matter.
Mr Tobin was working as a handyman at the Roman Catholic church, but was known to Angelika and Father Gerry Nugent as Pat McLaughlin.
After supplying police with this false name and false address earlier this week he fled the city.
Officers from Strathclyde police are expected to journey to London to speak to Mr Tobin in the next few days.
Father Nugent yesterday expressed his dismay at the grim discovery made in his chapel house, where he allows people needing accommodation to stay.
The languages student, who had a Scottish boyfriend, had been making her second visit to Glasgow, where her elder sister also works.
