Espanyol recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over German side Werder Bremen to put one foot into the Uefa Cup final at the end of the first leg of their semi-final clash.
The Olympic Stadium crowd in Barcelona saw their side take the lead after 21 minutes through defensive midfielder Moises Hurtado Perez.
Former Birmingham City striker Walter Pandiani had doubled the advantage shortly after the break before the Budesliga outfit suffered a major blow with the dismissal of keeper Tim Wiese nine minutes later.
With their numerical disadvantage the visitors struggled to contain Ernesto Valverde's men in the closing stages and Ferran Coro duly wrapped up the win with a strike in the final two minutes of normal time.
The other semi-final remains very much in the balance after Osasuna belied their lowly position in la Liga to record a 1-0 win at home to Sevilla.
The game's only goal came in the 55th minute through striker Roberto Soldado who is currently on loan to Los Rojillos from Real Madrid.
