Sir Ridley Scott has revealed intriguing new details about the forthcoming fifth instalment in the Alien series of films.
It was announced in July that the Blade Runner helmer, who directed the 1979 original, was to return to the science-fiction saga for a new Twentieth Century Fox prequel.
Details of the new project, scripted by Jon Spaihts, had been largely sketchy, with Variety reporting the film would focus on a space vessel being diverted off course to investigate a mysterious warning signal from a nearby planet.
But while fans had expected the forthcoming film would reveal how the xenomorph aliens came to land on the LV-426 planet featured in Alien and Aliens, Scott has hinted the story could take a different direction.
"It's a brand new box of tricks," Sir Ridley told Empire magazine at the London Film Festival premiere of his daughter Jordan's film Cracks
"We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper."
He continued: "The prequel will be a while ago. It's very difficult to put a year on Alien, but [for example] if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place 30 years prior."
Advertisement director Carl Erick Rinsch had been originally lined up to direct Spaihts' script for Scott's Scott Free Productions but after Fox showed reluctance to allow a first-time feature filmmaker to take on the franchise, Scott himself agreed to return to the sci-fiction/horror series.
