Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland has beaten Avatar to score the biggest opening weekend for a 3D film in the UK, distributor Disney has claimed.
Since opening last week the Johnny Depp-starring movie has earned £10.7 million in the UK, ahead of the £8.5 million made my James Cameron's Avatar.
The modern adaptation of Lewis Carroll's beloved book also earned Burton his best-ever opening weekend in Britain, and ranks only behind the latter two Pirates of the Caribbean films for Disney in terms of opening weekends.
In the US Alice and Wonderland made $116.3 million after the best opening weekend for a non-sequel, helping it towards a global opening weekend haul of $210 million.
Alice in Wonderland is the seventh collaboration between Burton and Depp, who stars as the Mad Hatter alongside Mia Wasikowska's Alice, Helena Bonham Carter's Red Queen and Anne Hathaway's White Queen.
