Aberdeen put up a spirited display against Spanish giants Athletico Madrid but lost 2-0 in the Uefa Cup this evening.
An away match at Athletico Madrid, who sit fifth in La Liga, was always going to be a tough assignment for the Scottish team. But although they were under pressure for a large part of the game, it took a penalty and a brilliant free-kick to break Aberdeen's residence.
Athletico should have taken the lead in the first few minutes of the game but former Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia missed from 15 yards out when he only had the goalkeeper to beat.
The home side came even closer when left-back Mariano Pernia saw a thundering 25-yard effort rattle of the post.
Madrid enjoyed a lot of possession but didn't create a lot of chances and Aberdeen's rhythm was only broken due to two forced substitutions. Chris Clark and Jackie McNamara were both forced to go off injured and minutes later Aberdeen were a goal down.
Michael Hart brought down Javier Aguero in the penalty area and former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan stepped up to score.
Substitute Simao Sabrosa curled in a brilliant 30-yard free-kick on the hour mark to seal the win for Madrid.
Aberdeen pushed forward looking to get back in the game, but the best they could manage were a couple of long-range efforts which failed to trouble the Madrid keeper. The Scottish side are now bottom of Group B and have a mountain to climb in order to reach the next round.
