Darren Ferguson's reign as Peterborough United manager has ended after a disappointing start to the 2009/10 Championship season.
The 37-year-old Scot, who led Posh to back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship after taking over in January 2007, has been relieved of his duties following crunch talks with senior club officials following Saturday's 3-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.
Ferguson had become one of the most highly rated young British managers following successive promotions in his first two full seasons as a manager and was wanted by Reading in the summer.
But the London Road club have struggled in their first season back in the second tier and are currently bottom after winning just two games.
"Following a series of meetings with the manager, Peterborough United and Darren Ferguson have decided to part company with immediate effect by mutual consent," a statement from the club confirmed.
"The football club would like to thank Darren for his magnificent service during his time at London Road and wish him and his family all the best for the future.
"Peterborough United Football Club wish to assure all its supporters that the perceived delay in announcing the departure of the manager by mutual consent was entirely due to the confidential terms and conditions that underpinned the agreement which was not approved and finalised until Tuesday afternoon."
Former Leicester City and England Under 21 manager, Peter Taylor - sacked by League Two outfit Wycombe last month - is joint favourite to succeed Ferguson along with former Reading manager Steve Coppell, who is thought to have turned down Brighton earlier this month.
