Angry fans bombarded the X Factor website with messages attacking Simon Cowell after he controversially 'saved' Irish twins John and Edward from elimination.

The twins, dubbed Jedward, have been consistently criticised by Cowell for a lack of singing talent, while members of the public have also come under fire for voting for an act in what is ostensibly a singing competition.

But last night he let the "public decide" when it came down to Jedward and Lucie Jones, mentored by Dannii Minogue.

A message on the official website of the show, which was watched by a peak audience of 16.6 million people on Sunday, said: "Due to last night's shocking result that saw Lucie voted out of the competition, the website has been swamped with so many comments of indignation that the message boards have temporarily buckled under the sheer weight of your outrage.

"After Lucie's shock exit, thousands and thousands of comments flooded the site until the facility that enables you to share your views collapsed.

"A team of dedicated boffins have been working through the night to fix the blip, so you can get back to doing what you do best... sharing your opinions on the nation's favourite TV show."

Jedward, which even the prime minister has been asked to comment on, have polarised viewers throughout the series, but it seems public opinion may now be turning against them.

Their odds of winning the contest have been lengthened to 25-1 while the backlash has been continuing on micro-blogging site Twitter.

User Becksie1977 wrote:"really really REALLY does not understand all the fuss about those twins..Jedward Mania...WTF?!? talk about the Not So Great British public."

Kookyrox added: "Jedward… Anyone with any sense can see...It's all a set-up and IT'S BUSINESS!!"

Writing on her own Twitter page, judge Dannii Minogue said: "Lots of Tweeters wanting to vote people off, rather than win The X Factor!"
