Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones has explained plans for his new group Them Crooked Vultures surfaced at the perfect time.

Jones, his former bandmate Jimmy Page and drummer Jason Bonham - son of original Zeppelin drummer John - had initially considered touring as a new outfit after singer Robert Plant said he did not want to commit to a full-scale band reunion.

But with the remaining Zeppelin members unable to find a new frontman, the opportunity to record with Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme was a golden opportunity, Jones explained.

"Jimmy and I rehearsed a bit with Jason Bonham and we couldn't really agree on singers and that fell by the wayside," he told the BBC.

"Then this came along and to be honest, I'm really happy."

Them Crooked Vultures premiered their single New Fang on YouTube this week, with their self-titled debut album to follow on November 17th.

Jones explained the single - which you can hear below - was the first song the Vultures worked on together after forming.

"Dave said: 'I've got these chords,' so we thought, 'Let's have a bash at that'," he explained. "We worked it into the song you hear now."

The band embark on a sold-out tour in December, with tickets snapped up in just 12 minutes.
