Eagerly anticipated sci-fi film Avatar is to be the first of a trilogy, according to leading man Sam Worthington.

The James Cameron film has been some 15 years in the making, with the Titanic director forced to wait for special effects technology to become sufficiently advanced to realise the ambitious design.

Thirty-three-year-old Worthington won the lead part of paraplegic ex-Marine Jake Sully in 2007, as well as landing a role in Terminator Salvation on Cameron's recommendation, and has revealed the Aliens helmer plans to return to the fictional moon of Pandora for two further films.

"We're signed for a trilogy," he told Total Film. "But I think I'll be 94 by the time it finishes, to be honest. I know Jim's got some ideas in his big head."

Worthington added the gruelling nature of the Avatar production comes from Cameron's exhaustive approach to filmmaking.

"You work 18-hour days," he added. "I was on it for 14 months. Jim's still editing. We'll still be filming it up to the day it's released - probably after the movie comes out, knowing Jim!

"That commitment is what makes him the man he is. It's life or death. It's war. That's how he approaches movies."

Avatar is released on December 16th.
