Gretna could field a team to play Celtic on Sunday after players decided not to go on strike following contract negotiations.
The club's administrator, David Elliot, was unable to give assurances that players' contracts would be honoured until the summer, meaning that a weakened side could be fielded.
A dozen players have indicated that they are unwilling to feature unless the assurances are given.
The club are aiming to generate funds from the match against Celtic, which will take place at Livingston's Almondvale Stadium.
But players could be left in limbo if their situations are not sorted by the end of the season.
Players will now make a personal decision on whether to play in the game and Fraser Wishart, player's union chief, said: "They are two-and-a-half weeks behind with their wages and it's a big decision for these players. The players are disillusioned.
"They are being asked to put themselves on the line without any assurances. It's down to the individual whether to play or not," he explained.
Players have been told that they can look for other clubs although the closure of the transfer window could make it difficult for sales to be agreed.
