Crazy Frog outselling Coldplay

Thursday, 26 May 2005 09:37
Chris Martin's band is being outsold by Crazy Frog's Axel F ringtone
The Crazy Frog's Axel F ringtone is currently outselling Coldplay's new single and looks set to take the number one spot this weekend.

Early reports from retailers suggest Speed of Sound, the first single to be released from Coldplay's upcoming album X&Y, is almost certain to be beaten into second place by the ringtone.

Coldplay had been widely tipped to take the number one slot with their first new single for two years, especially after the track entered the US charts in the top ten - making Coldplay only the third UK band to achieve this success.

But a spokesman for music retailer HMV said that Speed of Sound is currently being outsold four to one by Jamster's Crazy Frog ringtone.

He commented: "Music purists might not be too happy at the prospect of the Crazy Frog outselling Coldplay.

"But it shouldn't come as that much of a surprise when you consider its huge novelty appeal and the massive amount of exposure it's currently getting."

In recent weeks the company behind the track, Jamster, has stepped up its publicity machine, and Crazy Frog adverts have had large amounts of airtime on commercial television.

The new ringtone, by German band Bass Bumpers, combines the more traditional Crazy Frog sound with the theme to the Beverly Hills Cop film. This movie theme, by Harold Faltermeyer, itself reached number two in the charts when it was released 20 years ago.
