PS3 launch boosts sales at Game
Computer game retailer Game Group has said its sales increased by 44 per cent on the back of the PlayStation 3 launch last month.
The high street firm said that the UK debut of Sony's console boosted returns in a traditionally quiet time of the year for gaming vendors.
In the last 12 months overall, Game's sales totalled £801 million, up from £645 million in the previous year.
Sales were undoubtedly helped by the advent of the next generation of consoles, following the launch of Nintendo's Wii at Christmas 2006 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 the previous year.
The 16.2 per cent rise in like-for-like sales at Game's retail outlets, which now number 834 across nine countries, boosted profits at the group from £8.2 million last year to £33 million.
Game chairman Peter Lewis said today's results demonstrated the appeal of the firm's "specialist proposition and enhanced consumer offering".
"The industry transition to new technology is now complete and although we remain conscious of the competitive environment in which we operate, we believe the strength of our brand and our unique specialist offering gives us a robust consumer proposition," he said.
