The FTSE 100 was up 1.33 per cent this morning boosted by miners and travel stock.

The news tour operator XL was going to the wall boosted the share price of rivals TUI Travel and Thomas Cook.

At 9:10 BST the index stood at 5,389.00 – up 70.60 points

TUI Travel was up 7.10 per cent to 237.50p and Thomas Cook rose 6.81 per cent to 251.00p

Miners founded the rest of the backbone of the rise – with rises for Eurasian (5.59%), Xstrata (5.32 per cent) and BHP Billiton (up 4.27 per cent).

Meanwhile, UK retailers saw the brunt of any downward sentiment.

Builders merchant Wolseley was down 3.22 per cent, while Kingfisher fell 1.38 per cent.

Supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury and Morrison dropped 1.28 per cent, 1.09 per cent and 0.89 per cent respectively.

Gains in London followed rises seen in New York last night – with the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index rising 1.46 per cent – and in Asia with the Nikkei up 0.93 per cent.
