Frank Lampard has responded to a plea from Arsene Wenger by admitting that he was not punched by Emmanuel Adebayor in last Sunday's tempestuous Carling Cup final.

The Arsenal manager claims his striker was wrongly dismissed in time added on at the end of the game, which Chelsea won 2-1, after match officials claimed he punched the England midfielder.

But Lampard's agent Steve Kutner today said: "I've spoken to Frank and he told me that he wasn't punched."

The statement is reinforced by the FA itself, who, in response to Wenger's claims that an assistant referee lied in his post-match report, insist that Adebayor was not shown a red card for punching Lampard.

But the FA statement does indicate that the Togo international was given his marching orders for his aggressive attitude, a shove at Blues defender Ricardo Carvalho and a missed punch aimed at Lampard.

Speaking after last night's 1-0 FA Cup fifth round replay defeat at Blackburn Rovers, Wenger
urged Lampard to "tell the truth" over the scenes that have largely overshadowed an otherwise absorbing Carling Cup final.

John Obi Mikel and Kolo Toure were also shown red cards for their part in the scuffle that involved players, managers and officials from both clubs.

Appeals for wrongful dismissal from Mikel and Adebayor have both failed, while the Arsenal striker and team-mate Emmanuel Eboue have been charged by the FA with reacting aggressively and failing to leave the field of play; and violent conduct respectively.

But after the FA confirmed it wants Wenger to explain his comments that directly accuse an assistant referee of lying, there could be yet more disciplinary woe to follow for Arsenal.End of story
