Video: Mind the Whales

Wednesday, 22, Apr 2009 06:28

Commuters arriving at London's Victoria Station this morning were greeted by the unlikely sight of a giant tin of whale meat. The one-off work by cult LA based art duo Kozyndan was commissioned by Discovery Channel to stimulate attention and debate around the deeply controversial issue of whaling.

Throughout the day travellers passing through Victoria were stopped in their tracks by the structure, which presided over the station concourse and represents both sides of the whaling debate, from the points of view of both conservationists and the fishing industry.

Its arrival at Victoria coincides with the launch of Discovery's new documentary series Whale Wars, which premieres on 27th April at 21:00 BST.

The series charts the progress of Captain Paul Watson of the ship Steve Irwin and his team from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Watson was a co-founder of Greenpeace but broke away in the mid '70s to form Sea Shepherd, believing that a much tougher approach was needed to combat whalers and violators of marine law.
