Michael Perham begins round-the-world solo attempt
A British teenager has begun his record-breaking attempt to sail solo around the world.

Michael Perham, 16, is already in the record books for becoming the youngest person to traverse the Atlantic two years ago.

The teenager, from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, set off on his four-and-a-half-month journey that will see him miss Christmas earlier today.

Michael will be limited to contact with his family via a satellite phone that he plans to use sparingly.

Speaking before his departure Michael told Sky News: "There are times when there's no time to do anything other than focus 100 per cent on sailing.

"But then there are times when I've got more time to relax and enjoy myself.

"I have two iPods full of my favourite music and a bunch of DVDs and books ready to take with me to make sure I don't get too bored."

Michael, whose journey on his Open 50 Racing Yacht will be raising money for charities such as Save the Children, will be posting daily blog updates on his website totallymoney.com/sailmike.
