Pussycat Dolls sing sbout growing up this week
inthenews checks out Black Kids, Pussycat Dolls and the Zutons in this week's biggest CD singles.

Single of the week

Johnny Foreigner: Salt, Peppa and Spinderella

Best Before Records; out September 8th

Utterly exhilarating electro-indie from the Birmingham trio - a Bloc Party remix is fitting and this tale of youthful disappointment smacks of Kele and co if they were a little bit chirpier. It's magnificently crafted and just as Ian Curtis commanded, it makes you want to "dance, dance to the radio". Unmissable.

Colbie Caillat: Bubbly

Universal Republic; out September 8th

The silky-voiced daughter of a former Fleetwood Mac producer, Colbie's a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Malibu and you can almost hear the sea rolling in on this gentle, summery groove which tries so hard to be inoffensive that it's hard to remember. Still, it sat in the Billboard Hot 100 for more than a month, so the UK might be swayed by its charms.

UNKLE: Remix Stories (Volume One)

Surrender All; out September 8th

A compilation of James Lavelle's music for films, adverts and documentaries, here we have a quartet of magnificently-produced, mildly unnerving intellectual dance which beats a steady drill into your brain. Music to design trendy furniture to.

Black Kids: Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo)

Almost Gold; out September 8th

Hair metal guitar shreds over a disco beat and before you know it, your feet are tapping to a fantastic piece of 80s-inspired pop. The Youngblood twins bicker over a bubbly rhythm - not in a Colbie Caillat way - and it's a fine representation of a band who might have greatness in their hands if they can sort out their shambolic live shows.

Asteroids Galaxy Tour

The Sun Ain't Shining Anymore; out September 15th

Tired of new acts going for a retro 60s sound? No? Then the debut single from this Danish quartet will be right up your street and, to their credit, its swirling strings and hypnotic vocals actually could have come from the summer of love, unlike the synthetic stupor of Duffy's output.

Feeling: Join With Us

Universal; out September 8th

Yep, it's the one from the Toyota Arius advert, so not the coolest proposition but then again, neither are the Feeling. Dan Gillespie Sells puts on a strange mockney accent as an annoyingly over-produced and syrupy slice of Radio 2-friendly pop murmurs along. And - aaarrgghh! - there's a sax solo!

Goyte: Learnalilgivinandlovin'

Lucky Number; out September 8th

Well, I never, it's 1964… a jerky, expansive Northern Soul wonder, with Spector-esque scale and a soaring chorus you could imagine Steve Winwood belting. Wonderful.

Pussycat Dolls: When I Grow Up

Universal; out September 8th

Wow, it's the new Pussycat Dolls sound! Oh no, hold on, it's the same. Nicole Scherzinger is still the only one really bothering to sing while the other dolls' contributions extends to a "hahahaha" refrain - yes, really - as they sing of dreaming of being famous as little girls. It's probably supposed to be tongue in cheek. I don't get it.

Mogwai: Batcat

Wall of Sound; out September 8th

A preview of their upcoming The Hawk is Howling album, this is Mogwai at their eardrum-bothering best, a five-minute-plus maelstrom of thunderous drums, spiralling guitar and a general sense of falling into a cocaine-fuelled binge from which you might never recover. In a good way.

Zutons: What's Your Problem?

Deltasonic; out September 8th

Top-notch horn-laden indie pop from Dave McCabe and co, coming across like a Scouse Small Faces and probably very perky from all those Valerie royalties.
