TV releases on DVD

Monday, 28 Apr 2008 17:12
Joe Dempsie is in cracking form in Skins series two
Ashes to Ashes, Skins and That Mitchell and Webb Look in this week's biggest TV DVDs.

The first series might have been all drug-taking, casual sex and youthful irresponsibility far riskier than anything experienced by any of the viewers, but the second - and final, for this cast at least - of Skins took a darker turn, with Sid (Mike Bailey), Michelle (April Pearson) and the gang reeling from Tony's (Nicholas Hoult) brutal collision with a bus at the end of the first series.

And things never really lightened up, to be honest, whether it be Maxxie's (Mitch Hewer) unfortunate brush with stalker Sketch (Aimee-Ffion Edwards), the gradual crumbling of Sid's world, Jal (Larissa Wilson) facing the harsh glare of adult responsibility far earlier than she'd like, Cassie (Hannah Murray) losing any sense of normality and an end for Chris (Joe Dempsie) than nobody wanted to see.

With fantastic guest spots, scene-enhancing music and performances that mean the arrival of a new cast for the third series will be greeted with huge apprehension, this is a hilarious, authentic, moving and completely unmissable DVD release.

Here's the trailer for the brilliant series two DVD:

After the head-scratching ending of Life on Mars, the irrepressible Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) returned to our screens in Ashes to Ashes, with Keeley Hawes stepping into John Simm's shoes - not literally, of course - as DCI Alex Drake, and a sexual tension hitting the screen that never permeated the plot of its 70s-set predecessor.

Soundtracked by the likes of the Human League, Roxy Music and Adam and the Ants, Drake and Hunt do their damnedest to rid London of its criminal underworld. A second series is already on the way.

Take a look at the arrival of Gene Hunt below:

Cunningly scheduled to coincide with the start of Peep Show series five, the second series of That Mitchell and Webb Look is released on DVD this week, with the pair continuing to stake their claim to the title of the 21st century's Fry and Laurie.

Sketches range from 'The Incredibly Posh People Who Are Still Unaccountably Waiters/Vicars/Tailors', the 'Adventures of Sir Digby Chicken Caesar' and, of course, nonsense brilliance in the form of Numberwang.

Take a look at Numberwang with a blockbuster hue below:

Courtney Cox digs for tabloid grime in the first series of Dirt, also released on DVD this week, while Tamsin Greig is still unlucky in love in a second series of David Renwick's hugely-underrated Love Soup.

And, in some bizarre twist of fate that suggests a pact between DVD production companies, this week's releases includes a wealth of retro programming, including the sixth and seventh series of World War II comedy Allo Allo, ninth and tenth instalments of the exploits of northern pensioners in Last of the Summer Wine, holiday-camp hijinks in Hi-De-Hi, a third series of sarcastic sitcom Cybill and the first season of students' favourite Diagnosis Murder.

The Simple Life has also managed to last five series as well, but the less said about that, the better.
