Film releases on DVD

John C Reilly and Jenna Fischer star in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Walk Hard, PS I Love You and The Kite Runner in this week's biggest movie DVD releases.

Oscar-winner Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler star in PS I Love You, out on DVD this week.

An adaptation of Cecelia Ahern's chick-lit hit, the pair play a happily married couple - an arrangement that almost always ends in tears.

And so it does. When Gerry (Butler) dies, Holly (Swank) struggles to cope, with the help of her best friends (Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon), who introduce some much-needed humour into a frequently maudlin tale.

But in the weeks and months following Gerry's death, a series of letters he wrote begin to arrive, helping Holly to move on with her life while keeping her tied to the love of her life.

Hampered by a bizarre Irish accent, 300 star Butler does his best while Swank is her typically ebullient self in an ambitious romance.

After the first film in the series managed to comprehensively ruin the reputations built by the two individual franchises, how a sequel - Alien vs Predator: Requiem - was ever allowed is a mystery.

When a Predator ship crash lands outside a small Colorado town, the local residents - including a sheriff, pizza boy and Iraq veteran - are faced with villainous creatures from another world, most frighteningly in the form of a Predator/Alien hybrid.

Stranger Than Fiction writer Zach Helms moves into directing with the fantastical Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium, also released on DVD this week.

Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman and Jason Bateman star in a heartening tale of wonder, wisdom and never growing up.

Controversial delays and death threats in hand, The Kite Runner comes to DVD this week, with Marc Forster showing laudable restraint in adapting Khaled Hosseini's acclaimed novel regarding the wounds inflicted by years of conflict in Afghanistan.

Definitely worth a viewing this week is Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, with Judd Apatow looking to continue his run of hit comedies with this merciless lampooning of musical biopics in the vein of Walk the Line and Ray.

John C Reilly stars as the eponymous rocker in a breakneck ride through 50 years of music, with Dewey experimenting with musical genres, fathering 22 children, indulging in all number of addictions thanks to the paltry attempts at dissuasion from his drummer and befriending a chimp called Miles.

Though it never manages to reach the same comic heights as Knocked Up or Superbad, Apatow - with long-time collaborator Jake Kasdan - has hit on a successful formula and there's definite method to the madness on show here.

Also released this week is quirky romcom Feast of Love, with Greg Kinnear, Morgan Freeman, Selma Blair and Radha Mitchell in a low-key exploration of love in all its guises, while special editions of the Indiana Jones films hit the shelves ahead of the release of fourth instalment Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

A Blu-Ray version of Predator hits the shelves while the greatest DVD release of the week is undeniably that of Local Hero, Bill Forsyth's utterly wonderful tale of Texas oil man Mac MacIntyre's (Peter Riegert) love affair with the picturesque Scottish village he is dispatched to exploit. A grin-inducing Dire Straits soundtrack, sweetly innocent romantic undertones and a moving Burt Lancaster performance - they don't make 'em like this anymore.End of story
