Ventriloquist Damon Scott and opera singer Paul Potts became the first two people to get through to the final of the ITV1 show Britain's Got Talent.

In the first semi-final a public vote cut down the eight contestants to just three, before the judges - Amanda Holden, Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan - decided on the two to go through.

They elected for Damon due to the 'variety' nature of his act, which involves a monkey blasting out a pop song complete with dance moves and bewildered looks from the ventriloquist.

The performer's audition featured a scraggy looking monkey singing and dancing to Michael Jackson songs.

In last night's show, he elected for the Boyzone hit No Matter What and called the monkey Stephen after boy band member Stephen Gately.

Opera singer Paul received the largest public vote for his performance and judge Holden told him he was guaranteed her vote for his emotional display.

The mobile phone salesman from Talbot first sang an opera in a karaoke competition when he was 28.

He then won enough prize money to secure some training and believes he has spent £20,000 getting to where he is today.

According to Sky Bet, Paul is 33/1 to score the UK Christmas number one this year.

The final takes place on Sunday and the winner will perform at the Royal Variety show in front of the Queen.
