George Lucas has confirmed that he has "just begun work" on a live-action Star Wars television series.
But the filmmaker warned fans of the hugely successful saga that though the series will be set in the Star Wars universe, it will not feature the franchise's most famous characters.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the bearded storyteller confirmed some preliminary details for the planned series, for which Star Wars producer Rick McCallum is currently interviewing potential writers.
"The Skywalkers aren't in it, and it's about minor characters," Lucas said.. "It has nothing to do with Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader or any of those people. It's completely different.
"But it's a good idea," he added, "and it's going to be a lot of fun to do."
The Star Wars universe has already been explored in the six major movies, as well as spin-off projects such as Ewoks: The Battle for Endor and the animated series Droids and Clone Wars.
Lucas Animation have been developing another project for a number of months, using computer animation for another look at the clone wars so central to the saga.
Anthony Daniels, who played C-3PO in the Star Wars movies, is already attached as a voice actor.
Lucas told the time that TV networks were curious - if not ecstatic - about his proposed live-action Star Wars show.
"They are having a hard time," he told the newspaper. "They're saying, 'This doesn't fit into our little square boxes,' and I say, 'Well, yeah, but it's Star Wars. And Star Wars doesn't fit into that box.' "
