Chris Barton became the latest wannabe Joseph to leave Any Dream Will Do last night.

Andrew Lloyd Webber backed the public's opinion of the Ormskirk student as he gave Chris, who received the lowest number of votes, his marching orders.

He saved Craig Chalmers from the chop despite the Edinburgh vocalist's painfully flat notes in the sing-off, a rendition of the Lennon-McCartney classic The Long and Winding Road.

Lord Lloyd Webber told a disappointed Chris: "I don't think a West End audience would ever have the confidence to see you in performance."

Chris' exit in the series' fourth show leaves just seven budding musical theatre stars are vying for the coveted role.

The winner will have to perform at the Diana memorial concert five days before previews for the West End show begin, the BBC reports.

Lloyd Webber has denied claims that his decision to use his 20-minute slot at the concert is commercially motivated.

"Everybody who's on it is going to be advertising something on there - it doesn't matter who you are," he told BBC Radio Five Live.
